Warwickshire Swindells

Thomas Swindale (c1828 - 1861) moved from Burton upon Trent to Nechells north-east of Birmingham to work as a canal boatman. His sons James and Francis followed him onto the canals.

Another Thomas Swindell (c1825 - 1908) also moved from Burton upon Trent to Nechells but he and his children worked in factories.

Nechells

"In 1800 the population of this rural area was numbered in tens; by the end of the century it would be numbered in tens of thousands.
There is no longer an Anglican church in Nechells. St Clement's on the corner of Nechells Park Road and Stuart Street, designed by J A Chatwin, and consecrated in 1859, had been demolished by 1978 as the area was redeveloped. "

Two maps of Birmingham in 1731 and 1831 may be helpful in locating addresses in Birmingham in parish records and census. In paricular it is worth being aware that although Aston is to the north of central Birmingham, the Aston registration district included the area to the east of central Birmingham down as far as the boundary of King's Norton parish, ie it included the parishes of Deritend, Bordesley, Duddeston with Nechells and Saltley (amongst others).
