Notes

At the time of the 1881 census, Jane Swindle, described as 'mother' aged 78 was living with Caleb at Myrtle Bank (Limestone Brae, West Allen, Northumberland).

Caleb's wife Mary was born about 1836 according to her gravestone. It seems likely therefore that she was Mary Swindle, the daughter of John Swindle and Jane Ridley.

Mary seems to have named her children after her parents - John Swindle, Jane (Ridley) - and then her mother's parents (John) Ridley and (Elizabeth) Lowes and Caleb's parents - Sarah  and Thomas. Was William one of Caleb's grandparents? PS I have discovered that Caleb's maternal grandmother was Sarah Lowes so William could be named after her and not Elizabeth Lowes.

Caleb was 'present at the death' of Susanna Swindle, the illegitimate daughter of Rachel Swindle, at Myrtle Bank in 1868. However his wife Mary and Susanna would only have been third cousins.
