Notes

1    Information from Mary Pattinson

2    I have a note of Mary as being born in 1833. I cannot now track where this information came from. It is probably in error since Mary is listed as the same age as Vipond in the 1841 and 1851 census and is listed as being 22 at her death in 1857.

3    In 1831 George Swindle is listed as the tenant of Middle Houses North Farm at a rent of 26 per annum. (Middle Houses South Farm is rented by Eliz'th and Jos'h Wallace at 15 p.a,) This rent is typical of most farms listed but just three are over 100. The majority were probably farmed in conjunction with lead mining/smelting while the latter would have been full time farms. ["More Rents in Alston Moor 1831", Michael V. Wardell, Cumbria FHS August 2003 - from PRO Ref: ADM 79/53].
