Hannah Swindle

Born 1892/3 in Ireshopeburn (Weardale), County Durham.  Possibly the daughter of John Swindle or, less likely, Wallace Swindle

Recorded in the 1901 census at The States, West Allendale aged 8 born Ireshopeburn (Weardale), County Durham and living with Wallace Swindle, his wife Elizabeth, and son Wilfred.. Her relationship to head of family is described as 'daur' but is born 7 years before Wallace's marriage. Living next door with William Noble, his wife and his daughter, is Lily Swindle, eight years older than Hannah. It appears that either Wallace has married earlier (although he is described as 'bachelor' at the 1900 wedding) or has two illegitimate daughters or that he is looking after Hannah and Lily for some other member of the family. His brother Smith appears to be unmarried in 1881 and 1891; brother Joseph has his own family and is in any case rather young to be Lily's father. His eldest brother John, however, is old enough to have been their father. Nothing is as yet known about John beyond his baptism - he is not found in the register of deaths to 1866-1900 and nor in the 1881 or 1901 censuses. A birth certificate should resolve the issue.
