James (Jim) Swindle

Son of Joseph and Annie Swindle, born on the 13th of January 1894James Swindle 1894 - 1917 at Coalcleugh, Northumberland

Died on the 31st of July 1917 in First World War.

Brought up in Coalcleugh at the head of the West Allen valley and then moving with his father to Nenthead, at 17 Jim was working as a labourer on the dressing floor (where zinc ore was separated from native rock still attached to it).

With the outbreak of WW1 Jim enlisted but was killed at the start of the battle of Passchendaele.

 "James enlisted in the Army at Alston as Number 22141 in the Border Regiment. In 1916 James transferred into the 24th Brigade Machine Gun Company and was issued with a new Machine Gun Corp number, "43055". His title was Lance Corporal James Swindle. James was killed in action on 31st July 1917 aged 23. The information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission says that James was killed in action, France and Flanders. Information from the MGC Old Comrades Association says that James's  24th Brigade Machine Gun Company were involved in the Battles of Ypres on 31 July/1st August 1917 at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, and also on 31st July 1917, the Attack on Westhoek.
James is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belguim.   Plot 62, Row K,  Grave 22. His name on the grave has been wrongly transcribed as J  SWINDELL. "
