2    At the time of the 1851 census living with his mother, wife Elizabeth and children Peter and Jane at Hillersdon Terrace, Nenthead. Occupation - lead ore smelter. At the time of the 1861 census he is a widower living with his mother at Low Dyke Head, still a lead smelter but in 1871 he describes himself as a separator at the smelt mill

3    At the time of the 1881 census living with his son Peter at Bridge End Cottage, Alston, occupation stated as lead ore smelter. Still living with his son in 1891, now at King's Head, Alston

4    Died before 1871 since John describes himself as a widower in the 1871 census.
