A lead miner, living with his mother at Middlehouses at the time of the 1861 census and living with his wife at the time of the 1871 census

A farmer at the time of the 1881 census, helped by his sister Sarah and niece Mary (having apparently taken over after the death of his brother William). By 1901 Sarah and Mary's places have been taken by two servants.

2    Ages of John, sister Sarah, niece Mary in the 1881 census at Low Houses, Alston agree with those given by Mary Pattinson. Low Houses is just north of Garrigill, below Middlehouses.

4    Lowhouses farm in 1831 was valued at nearly twice the rent of Middle House North Farm, implying that it could probably sustain a family without a supplementary income from lead mining. ["More Rents in Alston Moor 1831", Michael V. Wardell, Cumbria FHS August 2003 - from PRO Ref: ADM 79/53].
