Notes

1    Boarding at 381, Iveston at the time of the 1881 census from where (381, Church Square, Leadgate) he married in 1882. However in the 1881 census he gives his age as 29 and at the wedding as 26 (rather than 33 and 34). This might be to minimise the age difference between himself and his bride. (His brother Wallace was similarly 'careless' about his age). In the 1901  census he gives his age as 48, in 1911 as 58

2    Registered at Lanchester in the 3rd quarter of 1883

4    The death of  John Swindle aged 68 (ie born c1848) was registered in the third quarter of 1916 in the Haltwhistle district (FreeBMD 10b 401)

The death of a John Swindle aged 74  (ie born c1848) was registered in the first quarter of 1922 but in the Morpeth district (FreeBMD 10b 715). That John Swindle has not been otherwise identified - but why should this John Swindle have moved to the Morpeth area?

The death of a John Swindle aged 84 (ie born c1852 - this John's claimed birth year) was registered in the third quarter of 1936 in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne district. (John Swindle 1851 - 1936)
