Mary Swindle

Daughter of John Swindle and Mary Stout, born 25 December 1835 at Middlehouses and baptised on the 22nd of October 1836 at Redwing, Garrigill, Cumberland

Living with her mother at Middle House, Garrigill at the time of the 1851 census.

Almost certainly Mary spent her life looking after her elder sister (Tamar)'s family (1861) moving with them to Crook in County Durham (1871, 1881) when Tamar's husband took up coal mining rather than lead mining. Later (1891, 1901) she is living with Tamar's daughter Annie and her husband Lawrence Lowe, still in Crook.

Death is probably that registered at Bishop Auckland in the 3rd quarter of 1901 for Mary Swindle aged 63.

1     A Mary Swindle was buried from Middlehouses at St. John's Garrigill on the 7th of December 1857 at the age of 22. It is possible that this could be this Mary but she would only have been 21. It is more likely that it was Mary, the daughter of George Swindle and Mary Archer.

2    A Mary Swindle is living with George Emerson and Tamer in 1861, 1871 and (with George only) in 1881. She is described variously in the censuses as 'niece', 'sister' and 'aunt' but is the right age to be this Mary, Tamer's sister. (I have not yet looked for the marriage of George Emerson.

3    2nd quarter 1882, Auckland, marriage registered for  Lawrence Lowe and Annie Emmerson.
