Notes

Parents from marriage entry and baptism records for Mary, Nancy and John. Mother from Knarsdale, a few km north of Alston. Reported aged 88 at death, 77 at time of 1851 census - hence the estimate of 1773 for her birth.

An Ann Bell was baptised in Alston 28th Jan 1779, daughter of  Joseph and Mary Bell. A Joseph Bell married Mary Carr on 23rd Jun 1776 in Alston. This Ann would have been rather young to have married in 1794 but it is possible.

Mary, born 1802, is described as the second daughter. Does this mean that Malley (pet form of Mary) had died (since we know Sarah survives)?

No trace of baptism has been found for Peter, who marries Mary Dixon in 1822 at Ninebanks. If  Peter were to be Sarah's elder brother, and he had moved into Smallburns before he married Mary Dixon (he was certainly living there in 1823) it would be a good explanation as to why Sarah was living at Smallburns when her son Joseph was born.
