Living in Back Lane, Keswick with his brother Jacob in 18416. His daughter Sarah is nearby with John and Ann Rigg. Moved to Main Street, Keswick at the time of the 1851 census with his (second) wife, daughter Sarah, son George and nephew William; still there in 1861; at the time of the 1881 census, with his wife, son Norman and grand-daughter Mary Dowthwaite

One of five brothers who moved from Garrigill to Keswick

Died on the 5th of November, buried on the 8th of November 1889 at Crosthwaite, Cumberland

Vipond is described as a miner in 1837 and 1838; he is listed as a shopkeeper in an 1847 directory of Keswick5; in 1851 he describes himself as 'grocer and leadminer' and in 1871  'grocer and overlooker at mines' ; thereafter a grocer. 7

1    There is another Vipond son of George Swindle and Susannah Vipond, baptised 28th May 1807  in Alston, Cumberland. The 1881 census, the burial entry and the register of deaths all indicate a birthdate of around 1813. This was a puzzle until Norman Swindle found the later baptism at Garrigill.

2    Norman Vickers Swindle is described in the marriage register as 35, father Vipond Swindle, grocer

3    'Cumberland Genealogy' lists Vipond Swindle as a shopkeeper in Keswick in 1901. This is apparently a 1901 directory. The other Vipond Swindle s I am aware of at present would have been 13 and 6 years old!

4    Vipond gives his age in 1871 as 59?. In 1881 census 67.

5    "History, Gazetteer and Directory of Cumberland" Mannix and Whellan 21st Dec 1847

6    Also living in the same house is Robert Bowness - probably the brother of his deceased wife. (The IGI gives Robert, son of William and Sarah Bowness, baptised 23rd Sep 1821 at Crossthwaite. It also give a date of death as 6 Jan 1829 but there is another Robert, son of James and Jane Bowness, baptised 30th June 1822 at Crossthwaite.)

7    In and around Keswick 125 Years ago: November 1882 [from the English Lakes Visitor and Keswick Guardian which was published in Keswick each week from 1877 to 1910] Keswick Petty Sessions Illegal Weights and Scales Martha Temple, VIPOND SWINDLE, Sarah Scott, grocers, Anthony Mason, baker, Keswick, John Crawford, Millbeck, Miles Farrer, Braithwaite, Elizabeth Coates, Rosthwaite, Isaac Allinson, Stable Hills, William Clark, Bassenthwaite, John Fisher, Bassenthwaite, were summoned for having in their possession illegal weights and scales. The cases, which had resulted through negligence, were proved in each instance by Inspector Richardson. Each defendant was fined 20s [1] including costs.
