William Swindle

Son of Annie Swindle4, born on the 16th of April 1873 at Wellhope, Allendale, baptised on the 18th of October 1874 at Limestone Brae Methodist Chapel West Allen, Northumberland. 1

Buried on the 11th of December 1877(8? 3) at Carrshields, Northumberland (from Coal Cleugh)

1    Previously thought to be the son of Peter Swindle and Mary Ann Thompson, born 1872, based on location given in the burial entry - Coalcleugh - and the birth year fitting into Peter and May's family. William Swindle, son of John Swindle and Sarah Benn was also born in 1872 but was still alive at the time of the 1881 census.

2    The birth of a William Swindale was registered in the third quarter of 1873 in the district of Tynemouth FreeBMD 10b 246). This will be the son of Robert and Mary Ann Swindale, born 1873 in Horton, Northumberland.

No other matching birth registration has been found (including looking at all Williams registered in the Hrxham district in the second half of 1873.

3    The only deaths of a William Swind* registered in Northumberland in 1877 or 1878 were those of are William Henry Swindale, aged 0, in Newcastle in Sep 1877 and William Swindle, aged 5 in the fourth quarter of 1878 in the district of Hexham. (FreeBMD 10b 201). It seems likely that this latter one is the death corresponding to the burial above and that I have mistranscribed the date.

4    It is possible that William's mother is the Ann Swindle, daughter of  Thomas Swindle and Margaret Dawson, born on the 10th of February 1842 at Chair heads, Allendale; nothing further is known of this Ann Swindle.

It is more likely that William's mother is Ann, the eldest Wallis Swindle and Elizabeth Smith ,  born 1850. Elizabeth, widow of Wallace and Swindle was living at Wellhope in 1871. By 1881 Elizabeth had moved to Coal Cleugh - she was possibly living there in 1878 when William Swindle died. I.e. I am suggesting that Ann was living with her mother while William was alive.
