If I have the correct family in 1901 census Hannah states b.
Hamsterley,
1891 census she states b. Bedburn Durham is this them on 1891? WOW! You seemed to find all that effortlessly. How come I
had such a headache with it?
What website were you using to get all that information? Im currently signed up to ancestry.co.uk Thanks for that :D Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 00:49 BST (UK)
All from ancestry.co.uk
You were probably concentrating on b. hamsterley too much -also I noticed you had posted request on Yorks N Riding board, when really you should have been on Durham board. That's why I was uncertain if I had the correct family. It's always a good idea to have a look on the image to see who is livng close by. Anyway, you'll be able to find her in other census now! Ask if you have further difficulty Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Tuesday 15 May 07 00:52 BST (UK)
Oops! I thought it was Yorkshire. I thought Durham was a
fairly new county that only came into existence since the
1970's (My stupidity knows no bounds!)
Do you access the census returns via Ancestry? Or is there a different website you use that gives you more searching power? Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 01:13 BST (UK)
I access the images from Ancestry -I find it pretty good.
Sometimes names are mistranscribed and you have to use a little bit of imagination. You can search just putting in the first name, year of birth, county. if you are new to Ancestry, you need to "play around" with it for a while, but the searching power is pretty good. Also, if you have someone in the 1901 census and they were married in (let's say) 1879, instead of trying to find them pre marriage, I find it is best to work backwards through 1891/81 census to see if their p.o.b. changes (and age sometimes!) Hope this helps Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Tuesday 15 May 07 01:15 BST (UK)
Its ancestry that im using, but as im new to this Geneology,
then I dont think im using it correctly half of the time.
Shouldnt take me long to get up and running i suppose ;) Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 01:24 BST (UK)
Try a little exercise
The census I have given you- try to find them putting in just the information you had and then scroll down to see if you can find them. On 1891 there is jane Gibson W 76 b Hamsterley -see if you can find her in a previous census -she may/may not be a relative ?? Track people down to get the feel of using it. Good hunting, Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Tuesday 15 May 07 02:02 BST (UK)
I think ive found her on the 1881 census as:-
Robert Gibson Head 68 Hamsterly ( Lawyer or is that Sawyer????) Jane Gibson Wife 66 Hamsterly 1871:- IVE JUST REALIZED SOMETHING. Do a search for Jane Gibson b. 1815 in the 1871 census!!!!! The top of the photo of the census sheet (Whats the technical genelogical term for it?) has the Hall family!!!!!!!! It's my Hannah Hall! Suzard! You are a legend!!!!!! Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 13:26 BST (UK)
Well done -it won't be long before you're doing look ups for
others!!!!!
The "photo of the census sheet" is called the image The "census sheet record" is the transcription. It is always best to look at the image, as so much is mistranscribed. Where you aren't sure if the occupation is Lawyer or Sawyer -compare the first letter with other letters on the image -look for what you are certain is an "S" and an "L"-then see which is most like the first letter of Lawyer/Sawyer. Also if you find Robert Gibson on an earlier census, see what his occupation is then-if its Sawyer, carpenter, Joiner then he is most likely to be a Sawyer. I'm not going to look for you, as it will help you getting used to reading the images-but if you fail to decipher his occupation, then please ask and we will have a look for you. Another thing to look for on images -very often a double"S" in the middle of the word looks like "double F"-and sometimes is transcribed as such. Well done, Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Tuesday 15 May 07 15:47 BST (UK)
Brilliant! One last thing....
How do I work out what connect the Gibsons have to the Halls? Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 16:40 BST (UK)
The Gibsons may just be friends of the family -but there is
alwys a possibility they could be related.
If you find a visitor on a census I always find its worth checking out and put in a separate file, as their name may crop up later in your research Plus its a good trial fror you to get used to the site. If you have found Jane Gibson in 1861 you will notice matthew Pattison is living with them and is described as Father in law of Robert Gibson 1851 Robert and Jane Gibson are living with matthew pattison -Robert being described as son in law, jane as daughter So it's a pretty safe bet that jane 's maiden name was Pattison That gives you 2 more names which may be connected to your family -Gibson and Pattison. Maybe Hannah Hall's's mum (or gran) was a Gibson or Pattison before marriage -they do come from the same area. You have to use a little bit of detective work. But it's worth putting these names on file as you come across them, as you may find they slot in in the future Plus it's all good practice for you!!! Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Tuesday 15 May 07 18:43 BST (UK)
Thats crafty! But something that never would have crossed my
mind. I didnt realise I had to be related to Hercule Poirot
;) to do my family tree!
There is a lot more to this than meets the eye. May I dare to ask how long you have been a 'detective'? Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: suzard on Tuesday 15 May 07 20:21 BST (UK)
About 6 years with the aid of a pc
and for 35 years before that on foot/car/train visiting records offices, graveyards etc (still do that once a fortnight!) My father got me interested when I was in school! You'll catch up -it's so addictive!!! Suz Title: Re: Lookup help Hannah Hall Post by: Vasquez109 on Wednesday 16 May 07 06:40 BST (UK)

Hannah Hall - was she descended from Jonathan/Sarah of
Monkfield? I've just been to Durham Records Office and they
have records there of the " Hall family of Monkfield &
Shipley" and have copied Jonathan's Will of Jan. 1778 as
part of my family tree research.
