In 1841 Joseph, 32 years old, was still working Monkfield with his father. He then married Margaret Sanderson from the nearby farm at High Shipley and found a small farm of his own in Hamsterley (1851) but his father then died (1855) and Joseph was apparently able to 'retire' possibly on rent from his younger brother John at Monkfield.

Notes

1    The Halls of Monkfield were usually staunch Baptists but Joseph, unlike his younger brother John, was buried at the parish church.

2    1841 living at Monkfield with his parents,  1851 census - married, farmer 24 acres, no specific address in Hamsterley (visitor William Sanderson), 1861 'landed proprietor', no specific address in Hamsterley again, 1871 census - no specific address again. Note that Joseph's father died in 1855 and he was the eldest son. However Joseph's younger brother John went on to farm Monkfield.

3    Joseph was married between 1841 and 1851. The marriage of a Joseph Hall was registered in the second quarter of 1844 in the district of Auckland. (FreeBMD 24 17). The marriage of a Margaret Saunderson is listed on the same page. in 1851 a William Sanderson is visiting Joseph and Margaret.
